lost Lib on August 22, 1944

HI all,

I have found following two entries at RAF Liberator Sqn page.(to give credit http://www.acseac.co.uk/pages/)
I am wondering whether anyone can confirm the crash sites location...
I am looking for one Lib that should crash on the way in between Miskolcz and Warszaw...on August 22, 1944...
Any ideas?
Thansk

Peter

Hi,
How about KG938 of 178 Sqdn lost (Warsaw) on the 21/8/44
or EW229 of 34 SAAF lost (St Valentine) also on the 21st.
Good Hunting
Alex

The only Warsaw sorties on 21/22 and 22/23 August were flown by Poles.

The distance between Miskolc (Hungary) and Warsaw (Poland) is over 500 km. Quite a large area, I'd say.
I will look into this matter next week.

Re: lost Lib on August 22, 1944

Hi
I have the following info
EV839 was not on 31,34 SAAF sqn strength so must have been 178 RAF sqn.
EW261 was shot down by Night Fighters on way to bomb Marshalling yards at Miskolc.It was from 31 SAAF Code Y and the crew was S African under Capt FC Serfontein.If you want all their names let me know.
If it was same date it must have been a whole 205 BG effort.

Thanks, but the crash loction confirmation would be of help...I have one 4engine bomber crash listed south of Rimaszombat, SLovakia and cannot identify it...so maybe it is not 15AF plane but 205.BG RAF plane...

Re: lost Lib on August 22, 1944

I'll check my available stuffz (altough regarding this particular attack, I have more info from the ground but I guess, I have some losses from that day as well).

And yes, on 22 August, 1944 not just the 15th AAF had Liberator losses, semms to me, that in early hours of 22 August, 1944 the 205th BG suffered some B-24 and/or Halifax losses as well.

Re: lost Lib on August 22, 1944

The list of 205 Bomber Group losses (4 engined bombers) I have, although I am not 100% sure about serial for the a/c lost over Yugoslavia. I think I got it from escapee report which I lost somehow among my papers.

20/21-08-44 :: St Valentine :: No 178 :: KG938 :: LIA Austria

21/22-08-44 :: Szony :: No 178 :: EW239 :: LIA Yugoslavia
21/22-08-44: Szony :: No 614 :: JP228/P :: LIA Hungary

22/23-08-44 :: Miskolc :: No 31 SAAF :: LIA Hungary
22/23-08-44 :: Miskolc :: No 614 :: JP109/T :: LIA Hungary
