Captured Aircraft Questions
I am researching a B-17 that belly-landing on a German airfield in March of 1944. I have obtained the MARC and the Captured Aircraft Report (which is hard to read)
Pulled from Captured Aircraft report -Belly Landed -20% Damaged -"salvaged by special troops" Does salvaged by special troops mean salvaged for scrap? Any chance that this plane would have been salvaged for use? Any idea of who the special troops would be? Is there a list of planes that the Germans salvaged for scrap or for intel? If anyone knows alot about the KG200, I have a few additional questions. |

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions
I know a little bit about KG 200 and can recommend a couple of books. What did you want to ask?

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions
It is an open question regarding the salvage aspect. Sometimes, since spare parts were needed, crashed American aircraft were held for that purpose.

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions
That could be something like a "Berge Batallion", a salvage unit usually located and assigned to a distinct area. These units deal with all crashed aircraft, enemy or friend. Enemy aircraft is pre evaluated and then depending of its condition being sent to a scrapyard, where usable parts will be removed either for spares or for further evaluation. Otherwise it will be just scrapped up.

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions
Hi
The majority of Allied a/c were recovered by Berge Battalions but to lessen the damage especially to any new equipment of any new fighter or multi-engine a/c (especially as the damage was only 20%) then sometimes Vers.Verb.ObdL and KG 200 would send their own salvage teams. Perhaps this is what the report meant by 'special troops' What was the airfield location? Was it near to Ulm? Regards Tom Willis |

Re: Captured Aircraft Questions
Tom, Yes it was at the airfield at Ulm? Do you know anything about that airfield? I have additional questions about the airfield at Ulm, as well.
