Re: Sound of a 20mm cannon, Bf 109
Jagdkommando (if you are still out there!):
This question has stuck in my mind since I saw it. I remember seeing excerpts from a Deutsche Wochenschau which included the sound (apparently) of aircraft weapons on the soundtrack, but these were only fragments, usually with a narrator speaking over the top. Anyway, I finally found a complete copy of the newsreel, with a nice clean soundtrack on (where else) You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZthTR...eature=related You can check out the sound of weapons for yourself. I can make out at least two distinct sounds (20 mm + 30 mm cannon?), but others on the forum may be able to say what weapons produce what sounds. Regards Don W |

Hmm, I think some (most?) air combat sounds on the Deutsche Wochenschau were added from a "pool" of recorded sounds elsewere.
In that video you can mainly hear a 7,92 mm sound, or so it seems. Try this video for some heavy sounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tH25dVEk8E |

Re: Sound of a 20mm cannon, Bf 109
I strongly suspect those sounds were added in the studio for these newsreels. Camaras were rather primitivre back then, and I don't think field camare teams could record sound. On board gun camaras could neither, I think.

Re: Sound of a 20mm cannon, Bf 109
Gentlemen:
Definitely agree that weapon sounds on Deutsche Wochenschau were likely to have added after the film was shot. I've seen an interview with an Me 410 crew returning from a sortie, which used an enormous bulky microphone to record the sound - definitely not suited to combat conditions. That said, the weapon sounds used in the Deutsche Wochenschau may well be authentic, perhaps recorded under controlled conditions, well away from the front. I thought that it may be possible to link cetain sounds with certain weapons and thus provide a response to the initial post. Regards Don W |

Re: Sound of a 20mm cannon, Bf 109
Guys:
Them 20mm cannons sound JUST like the 20mm Quadruple flak guns in the Band of Brothers Miniseries; nickm |
