Dornier 217 at Orwell in Cambridgeshire 1942

Hi all does anyone have any additional info on this plane details below? I am writing a book on Cambridgeshire wartime aviation. Some records state it was operating with 6/KG40 but may well have been operating with KG2 at the time (can anyone clarify this and where these units were based on 8th Sept 1942. I am also intersted in the possible sighting of a Focke-wulf 200 Condor over Cambridge city, which was held in searchlights during a raid in 1942. I can be contacted personally on j.evenhart@ntlworld.com......Kind regards Julian

Do 217 E-4, Wk Nr 5502, F8+AP of 6/KG 40 was on the strength of KG 40 2 Aug 42 as it was damaged in an attack on Cambridge with Ofw Wilhelm Schnitzer & Ofw Georg Kittelmann wounded. However, when it was shot down by McRitchie & James of 151 Sqn on 8 Sep 42, according to KG 2, it was being operated by that unit, not KG 40. II/KG 40 was based at Soesterburg, I/KG 2 at Gilze but both were part of IX Fliegerkorps-Stab & II/KG 2 was at Soesterburg so probably the aircraft was borrowed to help make up for the losses suffered by KG 2 19 Aug 42.

FW 200 over Cambridge? This aircraft was a maritime assset and not used on such missions-another case of misidentification

Hi Chris, good to hear from you. Kittelman and Schnitzler eh? blimey I first came across those two over 20 years ago. Thanks very much for you reply.
Im not sure about the FW200 the eye-witness stated it was whilst there was a minor raid on the City...however I guess we shall never know. I know mainly maritime but then I spose anything could happen.
Do stay in touch kind regards...Julian
