Lt. Werner Menge, 4./JG 26

Gentlemen,

I'm trying to establish the correct date of the loss of Lt. Werner Menge from 4./JG26. According to the WASt loss return he was lost on 10 June 1944, but this was subsequently changed to 11 June 1944. In the summarily GQM loss returns RL 2/III/852 pp there was no loss listed on 10 June 1944 but a missing pilot on the 11th. Lt. Menge was posted as missing and only later declared dead. However, since these two sources were closely linked together, a wrong date in the WASt loss returns would show up correspondingly in the summarily loss GQM loss returns.

The location of his loss was given as the Orne estuary; however I have so far found no evidence that I./JG26 was in action over that area on 11 June 1944.

Therefore I would be grateful if anybody could resolve this question.

KR

Re: Lt. Werner Menge, 4./JG 26

Bonjour,
At that time (Sunday 11th June 1944) numerous Allied armadas were crossing Channel (bombers, fighters) for targets in Central France : did Allied archives report about such victory/loss ?
