Looking for photo of insignia of Aufklärungsgruppe 122 on wall in an RAF SQ Day Room in France during 1939

Hello,

Many years ago I remember seeing a photo of the Aufklärungsgruppe 122 insignia of the black stylized eagle on a yellow shield published in a book on the Phoney War period. This insignia was cut from a shot down German bomber and displayed on the wall of a day room of an RAF fighter SQ in France, probably in 1939. There are several British pilots relaxing in the photo. This may have been cut from the He111H of 2.(F)/122, F6+EK SD by 87 SQ Hurricanes on November 2, 1939, the first Luft bomber brought down in France by the RAF.

Does anyone have a copy of this photo or know where I can find a copy of it for use as a reference in color profile work? I checked Andy Mitchell's website on the unit regarding this incident, and there are other photos there of the crash and salvage of the above a/c, but not the photo that I'm looking for. Who knows what I'm talking about and might be able to help? This could well be an IWM photo.

Thanx,

If you have it, 'The Battle of Britain' by Jon Lake.
Chapter 'The Build-up to War', pg 27 in the edition I have.

Nice coffee table book.

Taitbb,

Thanks for looking for this. I've sent you a PM.

Just got a message that something I sent recently might not have gone through. If you didn't get this please post that fact and I'll get back to you

Regards,

Brian,

The photo you emailed was the correct photo. Thanx for sending it. I just realized that it was almost 50 years ago that I first saw this photo in a book, and my memory of it was a little off. One of the pilots is holding this souvenired insignia in his hands, while another across the table is examining one of the red prop spinners from what must have been F6+EK, shot down on 2.11.39. On the table sits one of the machine guns recovered from the wreck. It all fits. I suspect that those prized trophies never made it back to England. Now if we can just figure out a source for obtaining a print of the photo. Does anyone know what the source of the photo is?

Regards,

If I am reading the picture credits of the book correctly, the source is the 'Imperial War Museum'

Hello,

Thanks to Brian Tait, we have an image of this. It appears that this is probably an IMW photo. I did some research in their on-line photo ordering website, but everything gets down to using the right keywords. If anyone has a copy for an original print of this that they could send me, or better yet, the IWM photo number for ordering, I would appreciate it.

Regards,

Oops, I'm out of room for posting photos to my account. Will have to drop photos from earlier posts and try again.
