Full names of French Air Force members in 1940
Hi,
Is there a website which supplies the full names of French AF personnel in 1940 ? s.a. The full names of the crew of Potez 63.11 nr.317 of GR I/35 which crashed in Sint-Job-in't-Goor (near Antwerp) : Sordet – Vanaret – Lamy ? Many thanks and best regards Luc |

Dear Luc,
There are indeed some sites which can be useful to you, for example: http://www.cieldegloire.com/unites.php#france http://www.france-libre.net/origine-fafl/ http://www.france-libre.net/bataille-angleterre/ http://www.cheminsdememoire.gouv.fr/...aises-libres-0 http://aviateurs.e-monsite.com/pages...iberation.html http://archives.charles-de-gaulle.or...angleterre.php http://www.histoiredumonde.net/Pilot...ataille-d.html You might search this site: www.francaislibres.net/ Last but not least, you may consult Henry Lafont's book 'Les aviateurs de la liberte'. Good luck! |

There's a book about that unit but I can't confirm you will find the information you are looking for in it. But maybe you can try to contact the author.

Re: Full names of French Air Force members in 1940
For some reason my fist post did not get through correctly.
AFAIK there is no such site to find the full names of 1940 French airmen. Only the ones that died can be found with full details at : http://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defe...erre_mondiale/ The website below may have some full names even for survivors, but will usually only provide family names. http://www.passionair1940.fr/Armee%2...35/GR_I-35.htm The family names are very often used in French reports of WWII, and finding the full names is difficult in many cases. The links given by Teresa Maria are about the Free French, and only small a part of the airmen of 1940 joined them. By the way even the airmen that of North Africa units that fought on the Allied side after November 1942 are not included (Free French designation is limited to people who decided individually to join the Allied side, not to members of units that switched to Allied side after TOCH). But you can check http://www.francaislibres.net/, you will find full names and sometimes the story of the people. |

Re: Full names of French Air Force members in 1940
Luc,
Found two of three asked names thru books.google.com in the Journal officiel de la République française - p .4779: François Lamy (observateur) and Georges Vanaret (radio navigant). Sordet was the pilot, but no first name given in the journal. Groet uit Brugge, Leendert |

Thanks Leendert for finding this document.
By the way if you go back one page on it from the link provided by Luc, Saint-Exupery is there. |
