2/KG40, 22nd January 1944

Hi,

On 22nd January 1944:
2/KG40.
Heinkel He177A ( ). Night sortie to London. Shot down by RAF Mosquito night fighter of 85 Squadron and crashed in the Channel off Fairlight, East Sussex, 4.29am.
Oberfw. Alfred Billing (FF), killed
Fw. Otto Hirschfeld (Bf), killed
Oberfw. H. Hoffmann, missing
Uffz. Schlagkamp, missing.
Fw. Heinrich Beitter (B), captured
Oberfw. Franz Andrae (Bm), captured.
Aircraft lost.

Can anyone help with the first names and crew positions for Hoffmann and Schlagkamp?

Many thanks

I have the other 2 crew as Uffz Josef Stanjewski & Gefr Alfred Morbitzer, both gunners. Fw Theodor Schlagkamp was in the Melcher crew which crashed at Amy on the way back

Thank you Chris for your reply. My information was from : The Blitz Then and Now, Vol 3, page 330. Clearly the book is wrong and many thanks to you for the correction. Much appreciated as always.

Chris/Srob

I also have Ogefr (not Ofw) Hans Hoffman with the Melcher crew as a Bs.
Is that incorrect?

Cheers

The NVM for the Melcher crew only shows 5 men suggesting one Bs survived uninjured this has previously been suggested as being Ogef. Hans Hoffmann . Unfortunately I have not recorded the original source ,
