Re: Color for Rall's Bf109F "black 1"?

I actually doubt that that was the Friedrich in which he was badly injured in November 1941. To my eyes, that looks more like a perfect belly landing executed on a flat surface sometime in late summer 1941.

If I remember the narrative correctly, it was stated that the aircraft ended up in some sort of a ditch, and his back was broken in two places. The attached looks more like a serious crash-landing in the month of November.

Regards,
Sinisa

Hello Richard,

your foto is reproduced in JFV Vol. 6/II page 62. There is a note to the dark finish, probably dark green, but no connection to Oblt Rall and his emergency landing on 28 Nov 1941 near Rostow.

Regards
Leo

Re: Color for Rall's Bf109F "black 1"?

At least three more photos of this accident exist.
Two have been published in Wings of the Black Cross No.2, p.2, and neither of them is the one from Falkeeins blog post - the latter is quite popular, as I've seen it sold on Ebay several times, and it was also published in Jagdwaffe Vol.3 Sect.2, p.178, with basically the same caption as used by Mr. Falkeeins.
Photos in WOBC 2 show the aircraft from both sides. The two rows of white victory bars that are faintly visible on this photo sold on Ebay five years ago:
https://abload.de/img/_5713jkr0.jpg
are clearly readable in WOBC - there are 13 of them, applied to the portside of the rudder exclusively, which indicates that the accident most likely took place between 17.08.41 and 30.08.41 - however, it seems it is not listed in the loss list included in JFV 6/II. Jerry Crandall states that Rall crashlanded this aircraft after his 14th victory on 30.08.41.
A close up photo of the tail of what, in my opinion, is the same machine, can be found in Jagdwaffe Vol.3 Sect.2, p.167.
The camouflage indeed appears to be a standard scheme extensively modified with overspray in dark colours, possibly RLM 70 and 71 greens, which at that period was common for Stab/JG 52 and III./JG 77, but also seen on some III./JG 52 machines (see JFV 6/II s.67 and 68).
