17 October 1939
Hi guys
Re-reading Aleander McKee's STRIKE FROM THE SKY, I note reference to an incident when nine KG26 Heinkels flew to attack shipping at Lerwick - and shot down "an old flying boat" into the harbour (p.29 Grafton paperbook version). No date is mentioned. Checking against Chris Shores' FLEDGLING EAGLES, he mentions that (on 17 October) during a raid on Scapa Flow by KG26, "an intrepid FAA pilot made a single-handed interception in a Sea Gladiator. Struck by murderous cross-fire, the little biplane was shot down at once." Are these two different incidents, or has one author misidentified the victim - if indeed there was one? I can't find "an old flying boat" nor a Sea Gladiator loss to fit. Have I missed something? Cheers Brian |
