Search for a/c info - have crew details

hi all,

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I was wondering if anybody had any information on an aircraft that was shot down on the night of 15 Aug 44 over central France. I know the crew consisted of 5 RAF Sgts and 1 RAAF Sgt, the names are below.

I would like to know what type of a/c, their Sqn and perhaps the type of mission. Any help you can give is, as always, gratefully appreciated.

Crew:

C R Duton, F Fielder, J T Henry, A G Shipton, P Walker (All RAF Sgts)
W Hough (RAAF Sgt)

Hough's casualty and service files are not yet scanned on the Australian National archives but the casulaty file title is given as:

HOUGH, William - (Pilot Officer); Service Number - 417081; File type - Casualty - Repatriation; Aircraft - Stirling LJ940; Place - Bourges, France; Date - 15 August 1944

it might be useful to pay for it to be scanned.

Thanks Dennis.

Can I assume then that as there is no mention of the SOE members in the list of deceased that they were shot down after they had made the drop or would something like that just not be listed?

Thanks

Ned

Air Britain and STirling Story, confirm LJ940. while LK124 was also with 299 Sqn, it lasted until 1947

Re: Search for a/c info - have crew details

Small world this - Bill (William) Hough was a cousin of mine and was a only child - his flying records were given to our family after the death of his mother some 40 years ago and I have an idea that my brother has this document now. Seem to remember Bill was towing gliders - the journal should say, will get in touch with him and see if he still has it

Regards
Robin

Re: Search for a/c info - have crew details

Hello,

I am born in Vierzon, a town just near the crash site of the Stirling, I know well the story and has been in contact with some relatives of the crew.
I have a photo of Hough, the Stirling was full of its load when it crashed, we can find still some munitions at the place !
The bomber was shot down by the flak of Vierzon, they had some 37mm guns near the river Cher.
I met the sister of Bill Shipton, and the son of Dutton who lives in Canada .
The brother of Shipton lives in Australia, and a special memorial in souvenir of the crew has been erected near Sydney !

I am Alain Charpentier, you can contact me off board at:

Thanks Alain, we where never told what happened to Bill, and I never questioned his mother, like many of them he was so young to die. He was from Adelaide in South Australia and his mother was my Grand Fathers sister.

Tried to follow the link to you without any luck - any chance of scanning the photo of Bill and emailing me? allsound@ozemail.com.au

I will also see if we can get a copy of Bill's flight logbook up as well

Robin
