Grid Square 26684
Can anyone tell me where this was? The context is a report from a German patrol flight along the Biscay coast (Biarritz-Royan-Santander) in August 1940 but I'm not clear which grid system was being used.

Re: Grid Square 26684
Nick,
Same grid square mentioned in Einzelmeldung Nr 4 vom 18.8.40 (T-321 R88 Luftflotte 3) page 2 "In grid square 26684 (lying on the beach) 1 He 111, Kennzeichen DH, destroyed." Apparently, part of a report of (H)41 performing coastal recce of the Bay of Biscay from the Loire estuary on 17.8.40

Re: Grid Square 26684
Thanks Andy, that sounds like it derived from the same message as the ULTRA that I was looking at.
(H) 41 regularly reported on its flights along the Atlantic Coast, usually just reporting on Spanish fishing boats and other vessels sighted. It seems likely that the He 111 was from KGr. 100. On this particular day they saw a crashed french seaplane as well. Presumably that had been there a while. |

Re: Grid Square 26684
Nick,
That sea-plane is also mentioned in the same Einzelmeldung at grid square 26322. As with the He 111, lying on the beach. Have seen these Planquadrat mentioned in other Einzelmeldung but not yet found anything explaining them. Coincidentally, I was working on the Einzelmeldung Nr 4 18.8.40 this evening.

Re: Grid Square 26684
On patrols over water, whether near a coast or farther out, did the Luftwaffe grid system prevail or was the Marine system sometimes used?

Re: Grid Square 26684
Hi Nick
There was no direct radio link between the Air Force and the Navy. As far as I know, the Air Force did not use the Navy's PQ system (if they had an own system). The indicated PQ 26684/15 West denotes the beach between Warkworth and Longhougton (approx. 50km N Newcastle upon Tyne / GB). regards JoMe |
