Luftwaffe Units - Attack of Mourmelon airfield on 13 May'40
Hello Everyone,
The Mourmelon airfield, located in NE of France, was attacked by luftwaffe unit(s) on 13 May'40. There is no french reports dealing with the type of german aircraft used/units but there was a sole german attack reported on this airfield on May, the 13th. Does anyone know anything about the Luftwaffe unit(s) likely to have attacked or taken part to this bombing mission over Mourmelon? Thanx for any help. Cheers Jerome |

Re: Luftwaffe Units - Attack of Mourmelon airfield on 13 May'40
Hi Jerome,
Difficult to give 100% certainty. But it was most likely II./KG55, that attacked different targets in the Vouziers-Reims area (so probably including Mourmelon) around 6.30 a.m. This is the only big sortie on this area that I have for May 13, given that most Luftwaffe units were occupied over Dinant (in the morning) and Charleville to Sedan (after 11.00 a.m.). During this attack KG55 lost 5 Heinkels to combined and repeated attacks by No 1 Sqn, GC I/5, ECMJI/16 and No. 73 Sqn. Does this fit to the timing you have? Regards, Pieter |

Re: Luftwaffe Units - Attack of Mourmelon airfield on 13 May'40
Hi Pieter,
Thanks for the info. There are few documents related to this Mourmelon attack on 13th May'40. The sole information would be that the german attack was performed in the afternoon, around 6.30 p.m... I don't know whether or not KG Bomber units did missions around this area at this time Do you know which units could performed attack at the end of the day? Cheers Jerome |

Re: Luftwaffe Units - Attack of Mourmelon airfield on 13 May'40
Jerome,
I have no specific reports of an attack on Mourmelon at that time. In fact looking at all reports I have, the activity of the Luftwaffe was seriously reduced by the end of the day. Still there is one option. At around 19.30 the Hawks of GC I/4 from Wez-Thuisy, after escorting Leo451 bombers that attakced the area around Dinant, intercepted a lone He111 flying back east that they shot down. This machine of 5./KG55 crashed at Attert in Belgium. It is all conjecture, but it seems that II./KG55 was occupied with the Reims area on this day, having attacked in the morning (see the previous post) and the end of the afternoon. Hopefully someone can confirm. Regards, Pieter |
