Re: Sqd Leader Joll 604 Sqd

He was a Fg Off at the time and his claim was for a damaged. However, only one combat resulted in any damage that night (his) and a Ju 88 A-5, Wk Nr 0334 coded V4+MN of 5./KG 1 flown by Fw Ewald Baranowski failed to return, apparently coming down off Portland. It is therefore assumed that Joll got this aircraft

Thanks Chris, that first class information. Watch this space for a little more about Joll's claims. He has seven, four destroyed and two damaged. I have a lot on the Chawleigh claim including the names of the crew where they are buried etc. Even have a photo of one of them. That was 6 May 41

The 5th July Claim three crew bailed out POW one killed buried in Exeter. Crashed near the Red Dear in Oakford. Will be looking for more information on his other two claims. I was lucky enough to get his medals and log books plus the log books of his wireless app Dalton so much to do. Hoping to do a book about 604 withRichard Black of London Medal. Really good chap.

Once again thanks for taking the time and trouble. Nigel

Cant reply fully until I'm moderated bt many thanks for taking the time and trouble. Nigel

Nigel: As a former Honorary Member of 604 Sqn, I have quite a bit on the Sqn and met Dalton a number of times. I have copies of all combat reports as well so for him:

10 May 40 Ju 52

10 Oct 40 He 111 damaged (?)

1-2 May 41 He 111 damaged
5-6 May 41 Ju 88 destroyed
6-7 Jun 41 He 111 damaged
8-9 Jun 41 He 111 damaged
4-5 Jul 41 He 111 destroyed

29 Sep 43 Do 217 destroyed

As to a book on 604, that has already been done:

'If You Want Peace Prepare for War" by Ian White 2005

Re: Sqd Leader Joll 604 Sqd

I have both Joll's and Daltons log books which make splendid reading. I'm a drama writer mostly but writing about WW1 and 2 gets me away from the luvies lol. Joll made a claim "damaged" on 10 October 40, his only B of B claim. Where would I look for more info, like to find out more? It was a HE111 by all accounts. He was flying with 604 from Middle Wallop. he was with B flight with Cunningham. Thats all I know at mo. Cant wait to get moderated enjoying this forum.

Hi Chris,
I hope that you're well.
Do you have a photograph of A C MacLaren who flew with them during the Battle.
I have been after one of him for years to give to the family of his Air Gunner A C Metcalfe.
Regards
Gerry

Gerry: Not a very photogenic Sqn I am afraid and photos from the BofB are even rarer

The National Archives have Squadrons' Operations Record Books online (you can preview them free and download a given month for a small charge — or do it free if you go there). There may also be a night fighter sortie report in series AIR 50, from memory those aren't online

The Heinkel should show up in National Archives file AIR40/45, reports on crashed enemy aircraft. (Not available online) or maybe in the book "The Blitz Then and Now Vol. 3"

Re: Sqd Leader Joll 604 Sqd

The first two destroyed are easy:

6 May 41, 0026 hrs, Chawleigh=4./KG 54 at Chawleigh 0030 hrs

5 Jul 41, 0339 hrs, Oakford=8./KG 4 at Oakfordbridge, 0340 hrs

22 Sep 43, North Sea, 0113 hrs is harder as the only loss came down on land as a result of being dazzled by searchlights. However, a Do 217 of I./KG 2 was damaged by a night fighter off the Humber and returned to Schiphol. No other night fighter claims that night so likely he over claimed.

As to damaged:

1 May 41, 2300 hrs, over land. 219 Sqn claimed two south of Shoreham. Only two He 111 lost that night, none on land. They were badly damaged by return fire but I can see no record of any aircraft returning damaged, having been attacked by a night fighter or having damaged a night fighter

9 Jun 41, 0020 hrs, over coast. Nothing that would match albeit combat report stated an aircraft crashed 2 miles south of Botley (nothing listed)
