Two of the He111's of KG1 lost on 11 Jul 1940
I am working on two He111's of KG1 on 11 Jul 1940.
BBCA Vol.1/p.37 has a He111 of I/KG1 crashed in France after battle damage, Oblt Grunwald and 3 unnamed airmen killed. I have a 1 Staffel aircraft down (query 0330 hours) at Ligny-Tilloy, 3km südw Bapaume crewed by: Uffz Fridolin Hogg (FF) (8/53551) born 28 Feb 1915 at Stetten Über Engen/Baden Ltn Helmut Grunwald (BB) born 16 Jan 1914 at Marienwerder/Ostpr Uffz Herbert Köster (BF) (53551/45) born 23 Mar 1917 at Recklinghausen/Westfl. Just promoted from Ogefr. Uffz Gunther Mende (BM), born 23 Jan 1917 at Jarotschin Can anybody advise on the timing please, three of the crew seem to be recorded as dying at 0330 hours - apparently on the 11th ? Was this an He111 H ? The same page of BBCA has another 1/KG1 aircraft believed lost off Selsey, flown by Ltn Wagner, Hptm Beloreus and three unnamed crew. I have a 1/KG1 He111 H down in the sea, I believe off Brighton, crewed by: Ltn Peter Wagner (13/53551) born 7 Jan 1915 in Danzig (body recovered Beaumont sur Mer/Sotteville) Ofw. Werner Bischoff (4/53551) born 11 Mar 1911 at Kelbra- Eisleben (body recovered Veulettes/Dieppe) Uffz. Hans Krause (18/53551), born 20 Apr 1916 at Königsberg/Ostpr. (body washed up Veulettes/Dieppe) Hptm.d.Res. Dr. Karl-Heinz Behrens (BS) born 23 Sep 1889 at Celle Hannover. (body recovered in sea Nördl Cayeuse Sur Mer). His death certificate at the Hesse Standesamt gives his name as Dr Heinrich Karl Behrens, he was a medical doctor, and confirms his DOB and POB. Uffz. Walter Möhring (BM) (28/53551) born 10 May 1912 at Queienfeld/Thüringen (body recovered at Peuly sur Mer near Dieppe) Please can anybody confirm who was the pilot, I suspect Wagner, and the positions of the other crew members. Thank you Peter |

Many thanks John
Hptm Behrens must be one of the older Luftwaffe officers flying a mission as aircrew. Thanks for the link Chris |
