Cool Me.210 Ca Hungarian 04/13/44

Hello

According to Dénes Bernad-György Punka,it's 10 Me.210 and 5 hungarians Bf.109 shot down this day....but a few pages later in the same book it's only 7 Me.210 shot down.

10 or 7 shot down??

Re: Me.210 Ca Hungarian 04/13/44

Hi Michel,

These are the lost Hungarian (~-built) Me 210Ca-1s on April 13, 1944 that I know of. Different numbers can be the result of different calculations of damaged, or destroyed on the ground vs. lost in air combat losses. Note, that Hungarian-built Me 210s had part of their WNrs used as fuselage numbers (call numbers) applied still at the factory.

Hope this helps.

Re: Me.210 Ca Hungarian 04/13/44

Beside the RKI (Aircraft Research Institute) Me 210Ca-1s the 5/1. Night Fighter Squadron also lost 2 (4) Me 210s. Lts Forró Pál and Málik József were downed with their Re-2000s and bailed out safely near Ócsa, while a 3rd one (Sgt. Kass Ferenc, V.5+39) was damaged and landed at Tapolca. The Hungarians lost at least 3 Bf 109s in dogfight. On the Ferihegy AB several planes were destroyed on the ground, including 3 Re-2000, 3 Ju 86K-2, 1 Me 108B-1, 2 Potez. 63-11, 1 Caudron C 600, 1 Bü 131, 1 Ar 96A (G.2+12), etc. Several planes received different damages.

Many planes were damaged on the Győr airfield as well, including factory fresh Hungarian-built Bf 109Ga-6s (built for the Luftwaffe), WNr.: 760124 (DT+WT), 760127 (DT+WW), along with 3 RHAF Bf 109Ga-6s (WNr.: 95092 (V.7+88), 95253 (V.8+19), 95271 (V.8+23).

On the Tököl airbase 1 Fiat G-12T cargo plane was destroyed, while a Hungarian built Me 210Ca-1 (CJ+QW) was damaged prior to delivery to the Luftwaffe.

For this result the 15 AAF paid the bill with 4 B-17G, 12 B-24H and 2 P-47D of which the Hungarian Me 210s got credited with 4 B-24s. They claimed 2 P-38s as well, but those were both overclaims.

The Hungarian Bf 109s downed 2 (3) B-24s, the rest was downed by Flak. Warren N. Rustad's 449 BG B-24H (S/N: 41-28833) was credited to Irányi Pál, Bf 109 ace, who scored several direct hits on the B-24 before he had to break out in order to avoid the collision with his target. When he looked back, the B-24 disintegrated in the air in flames and its right wing flew off. The escaping crew had no chance as they bailed out with burning parachutes. For us it is impossible to tell what really happened to them as some sources say that at the same time the plane was hit by a falling bomb from another (376 BG) B-24 flying above when it was attacked by Irányi.

A very messy and tragic day…
