Junkers 88 Identification plate

A (US) veteran and I, are searching for more information about a Junkers 88 Luftwaffe plane. Another veteran brought an identification plate back to the states after the Junkers 88 was shot down.
We are now looking what information this plate contains.

I don't have a picture of the plate yet.

This is on the identification plate:
JU 88

What says this plate about the plane?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Dear RLS,

Unfortunately, this is a tag from an auxilliary component. There is probably no practical way to link this to a specific sub-type, much less an individual a/c. If the approximate date and location of a crash were known, there is a fair chance the a/c could be identified.

Best regards,

Artie Bob

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Hello RLS,

This probably came from a "Elektrischer Vorratsgeber" which was attached to one of the fuel tanks and gave the electrical signal for the fuel gauge in the cockpit.

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Hi,

I.m pretty sure that the 'bbl' is a manufacturer code as I have seen it on electrical items from a Heinkel. I suspect that this one was used 1942 on.

As I don't have a manufacturer code ID list anymore maybe someone else could help further?

Regards

David

"bbl" is the coding for: Bülow, Franz, Fabrik von Werkzeugen, Leipzig-Lindenau (W33), Demmeringerstr. 173-175.

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Hello,

Thank you again for the information. Very interesting.
I have a short story the veteran told me about the plane(s) .
He don't know exactly which plane it was.

Quote:
On 8 April 1945 a plane such as this was shot down near Langensalza, Germany.
On13 April 1945 near Zeitz Germany a Junkers 88 bomber carrying a piggyback plane attempted to slip through the defenses of the entire Battalion of the 778th the entire 64- 1/2 Tracks shot down this JU 88 killing the pilot and all the occupants.
From 13-19 April the 778th AAA AW (Sp) Bn shot down 15 category one's, the following date the 778th engaged 15 of 21 German Planes scoring 5 categories 1 and 3 category 2's.
What means this code on the plate?

PL 20727 845
and
VG 2

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Hello RLS _ SLR ;

Just a shot in the dark.
Could this be instrument plate (i.e. FL 20727 845 ?)

Examples of FL codes are found on this website below:

http://www.histavia21.net/Lw-Codes-020.htm

cheers

Re: Junkers 88 Identification plate

Hello Ed,

It could be.
I really have no idea.
But the code I wrote down, starts with PL, not with FL. But it could be that the veteran read it wrong, and say a P instead of an F.

Sincerely, and thanks for the reply,

Rls
