Wellington trying to land in Netherlands on 2.8.41
Hi all,
I found following story in one diary and I am trying to find out any more details about it. From the description anyone has an idea where in Netherlands they were trying to land? A Wellington returning on 2.8.41 from Hamburk asked for QDM where somewhere to the est off Texel and got course to the south. Navigator was thinking they are already on the north end of Wash bay so the continued to the south to Netherlands. They found an airfield with runway which was switched on so they were preparing for landing but they were welcomed by round from machine gun and finally recognized their fatal mistake and when they met a Bf110 which fortunately did not make an attack, they flew to Englad. TIA Pavel

Re: Wellington trying to land in Netherlands on 2.8.41
Hello Pavel,
Difficult to say, but according to a southern course over "The Wash" (IJsselmeer in fact) I should guess they may have come out over Soesterberg airfield. Best wishes, Hans Nauta |
