Soviet losses in air combat 1st October 1944
According to Tony Wood's claim lists, there were this day 3 German claims on the Eastern Front (according to the same list, there were none on the 2, 3 and 4... it is very probable that claims are lacking, but it was a period of relative inactivity and bad weather on most of the front. Anyway if someone has claims that are not listed below, I'm interested to know them). As all three are in remote time/area, that means that in each of the 3 battles only one Soviet aircraft may have been claimed, and so may be identified.
Sadly I have no access to Russian loss data, but maybe someone can help. The 3 claims of 1st October 1944 were: 1) a Pe-2 claimed at 09.36 hrs at 4.500m in Tluszcz area, NE Varsaw, by Ofw Helmut Schönfelder of Stab./JG 51 (Note: for all 3 claims conversion of Quadrat to place name is mine, and may be wrong as they are my first tries using the LUMA tool). At this alt, I bet it was a recon machine. 2) a Yak-9 claimed at 16.09 hrs at 2.200m in Lade area, NE Riga, by Ltn Heinz Wernicke (113th kill) of 1./JG 54 3) about the same time but far away, a second Pe-2 claimed at 16.11 at an unknown alt in Gassy area, SE Warsaw, by Ltn Peter Kalden of 13./JG 51 Thanks in advance Laurent |
