Piper L4 depending from the 79th DIUS ?

Hi all,

I'm trying to identify to which one unit could have belonged the Piper L4 shot down in area haguenau (NW of Strasbourg, France) on november 25th 1944 about 12h45.

It seems such an "artillery spotter" could have been depending from one ground unit and not from the USAAF. (so there would be no MACR...)

In this area was only the 79th DIUS at this time.

Do someone have some elements about those US Army "Grasshopers" working for the artillerie in Alsace in late november 1944.

Any information would be very helpfull!

Re: Piper L4 depending from the 79th DIUS ?

Mathias,

The 79th Inf Div had 310, 311 and 312 FA Battalions under 154th FA Bde.
ABMC mentions one casualty on 25/11/44: SSgt Percell Hunt with 311 FA Bn, but far from certain if he's involved in the L-4 loss you're after, which was a claim of Oblt. Herbert Rollwege of 5./JG53.

There were at least two other L-4 losses in the greater area, and these were operating with HQ Bty, 202 FA Bn. They were the L-4s with respectively 1 Lt Allen L. Hathaway and 2 Lt George T. Schleier on 18 Nov 44 near Harbouey and 1 Lt Orris E. Herr and 1 Lt John W. White on 4 Dec 1944 near Puberg.
Both Grasshoppers were hit by friendly artillery fire.

Regards,

Leendert

Re: Piper L4 depending from the 79th DIUS ?

Thanks Leendert,

It must have been easy for an ace as Herbert Rollwage to shot such a plane as a L4 down, with 13 and 20mm shells!

I'll try with some contacts in the 79th DIUS;

Not totaly impossible that a french unit would have been concerned? (the area was "liberated" by the french 2nd DB (with US help!) just 2 days before, and the crash presumed localisation still was at front line.

Thanks for your help.

Mathias
