Luftwaffe unit involved Preddy action 6.8.44
Hi Guys,
I'm researching a painting I've been commissioned to do featuring George Preddy's six victory mission on the 6th of August 1944. What I'm not too sure about is which unit the 109s he ran into belonged to. From the gun camera footage, I think I can see a tail band, and I believe I had read somewhere a long time ago it was Jagdgeschwader 27 that was involved. Can anyone throw some more light on this please? Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers Gareth |

Re: Luftwaffe unit involved Preddy action 6.8.44
I would think south of Hamburg is pretty far from JG 27 territory. Would think JG 6. JG 1 or JG 300 would be good choices to research. JG 300 claimed a P-51 near Luneburg that could match a 352nd FG loss in the same area.

Thanks for that.
I've got the Mombeek Jg1 and the Lorant \Goyat jg300 chronicles at home. I'll do some cross checking on those units when I get back. |

Re: Luftwaffe unit involved Preddy action 6.8.44
Preddy claimed his victories between Lüneburg et Havelburg.
I think there was a Gefechtsverbande composed of Stab/JG 4 (1 out of 2 lost), I./JG 3 (5/21), II./JG 5 (2/13), and III./JG 300 (9/15) that was intended but you should indeed check Lorant & Goyat's book to know if they were able to form together and have more details. |

Re: Luftwaffe unit involved Preddy action 6.8.44
John Beaman did quite a bit of digging on this very question, and if you search the threads here you may find his comments, or he may chime in when he sees your subject/title. He found JG 53's loss of four (and others damaged) seemed the closest match.
Good luck with your work, GRM |

Re: Luftwaffe unit involved Preddy action 6.8.44
Thanks for that tip! I had actually reached out to Ken McCoy who runs the 352nd fg website, he then put me in touch with a couple of historians. The upshot being that they too felt it was most probably Jg-53 2nd Gruppe that Preddy ran into.
So as that ties into what John came up with, I think that's the unit I'll depict. Thanks to everyone for their very helpful replies. Cheers Gareth |
