Wellington Identification Needed

Hi,

On August 11/12th 1941 a Wellington of No.218 Squadron crashed / crash landed at Martlesham after being badly damaged by flak.

Trying to establish the SN of the aircraft and the crash location.

TIA

Steve

Re: Wellington Identification Needed

Hello Steve,
Any fatalities known ?

Two 218 Sqn a/c on 3/4-8-41 and Two 218 Sqn a/c on the 14/15-8-41.
BCL 1941 by Bill Chorley has iirc 218 loosing 36 a/c in 1941.
But no mention of 11/12-8-41 loss.

Alex

Re: Wellington Identification Needed

Hi Alex,

No fatalities, the ORB records an incorrect serial and given the degree of reported damaged it would have needed extensive repair. BUT, I cannot find a Wellington that matches the date. The Marham Station Records sadly gives no clue.

Regards

Steve

Hello,

L3234 was a cancelled Avro-built Hart Trainer. Should read L4234.

Wellington I
P9207 - Duplicated Wellington Ic.

P9207 - Duplicated Wellington I.
W5449 - Duplicated Wellington II.

Other Wellingtons.
R1442 - Duplicated Ic.

Re: Wellington Identification Needed

Hello,
Interesting note.
BCL War Diaries
Pages 190/191.
So early in the war the RAF were dropping supplies to civilians in Europe.
Hampden's of 50 Sqn dropped 500 bags [ not todays tea bags ] of tea from the Dutch East Indies during the Rotterdam raid.
Are any other events such as this known to have taken place in the early war years ?
Alex
