67 Tactical Recon Group Losses 6 Jun 44

Can anyone supply any more details on the loss of 43-12156 and 43-12338 on 6 June 1944 and were they part of the 15 Recon Sqn?

Re: 67 Tactical Recon Group Losses 6 Jun 44

They were both in the 109th TAC RCN squadron.

43-12156 was flown by 1st Lt Charles E Stone. He was hit by light flak about 17:20. The plane flew for a brief time then went into a dive and exploded and burned on the ground. Virbil W Kimbrew's eyewitness statement indicated the plane crashed two or three miles east of Villedieux les Poeles at/near St Aubin De Bois. However, a memorial for Stone is located at 48°53'11.0"N 1°30'29.4"W at least 15 miles away from the crash location given in the MACR.

43-12338 was flown by Robert L Curtis. It is believed he may have been hit by ground fire or light flak as his plane suddenly lost oil pressure. His plane went down about 11:00. He had pulled up to bail out and then the plane nosed over. He was flying with Richard H Cassady. Cassady thinks Curtis may have been caught in the plane as it took a while for him to get out. By then he was too low for the chute to fully open as it was just stringing out as he hit the ground. Cassady states that if he just had another 200 feet or so the chute would have deployed. Curtis ended up about 30 yards from where the plane crashed and burned on the ground. The plane crashed at/near "Miniac", (Miniac-Morvan) according to Cassady's statement in the MACR.

Re: 67 Tactical Recon Group Losses 6 Jun 44

Good afternoon all:
Robert L Curtis was lost on 6 June 1944 and recorded in MACR 5528. the corresponding German records are:
J Report - J-1332 and AV Report - AV 1141/44
The crash locations are listed as"
1 KM E of Kervenarhant / 5km SW Morlaix

Hope that this helps a bit. Ted51

Re: 67 Tactical Recon Group Losses 6 Jun 44

It is interesting that the J Report on Curtis puts the crash about at 48.533481, -3.847136 (about 1 km East of Kervenarc'hant). Again this is not near the MACR reported crash site as reported by Lt. Cassady.

Thus it would appear that for both these crashes the accompanying pilot's eyewitness statements are wrong. While they both saw the planes crash, their "reported" crash sites are miles away from the "actual" crash site. I have often found this true for fighter MACRs with eyewitness statements . They are just plain "wrong" about the locations of crashes they witnessed or trains they shot up. Anyone else have similar experiences?
