2./JG 27 Leeuwarden 1943

Hi all,

I am looking for any information regarding 2.JG/27 flying from Leeuwarden in the Spring of 1943...specifically, combats on May 21, 1943. In a photo I found of a Bf109 G-4 from 2./JG 27 at that time and place, I am trying to determine if it still carried white wingtips from the Mediterranean theater. I am assuming the lower cowling and rudder are yellow? Drop tank mount on the belly?

Thanks in advance-Marc

Re: 2./JG 27 Leeuwarden 1943

The Gruppe did not take their Bf 109 G-4s with them when it left the Mediterranean theatre in November 1942. The reason for that is that it did not have them - from September 1942 until the aforementioned date, it had only the Bf 109 G-2s. The Bf 109 G-4 that the Gruppe was equipped with during the period of rest and recuperation, would not have the white wingtips, because there was no reason to have them in the European theatre of war.

Re: 2./JG 27 Leeuwarden 1943

Thank you for the reply, Sidney. I guess I'm getting conflicting information...in Ab Jansen's book "Sporen aan de Hemel" he states on 21 May 1943 that Oblt. Jansen crash landed Bf 109G4 werknr. 16163 near Steenwijk, and the previous attached photo was credited as a 2./JG 27 Bf 109G-4/R6 at Leeuwarden in March 1943. Are these in error? I'm trying to nail down the plane that Helmut Beckmann was flying then...Jansen's book shows a photo of a Black 7 but states he flew Black 15. I'm trying to unravel what was what...thanks for the input!

Re: 2./JG 27 Leeuwarden 1943

You are welcome, Marc.

I limited my response to the issue on whether the aircraft on the photo attached to your opening post had "white wingtips from the Mediterranean theater". As stated, I don't think so.

The photo itself is said to have been taken at at Leeuwarden at the end of March 1943.

Regards,
Sinisa

Sidney didn't say it wasn't a G-4, he said there was no white parts. No conflict. And yes, this G-4/R6 was officially shot at Leeuwarden in March 1943 as far I know.
Regards,
Franck.
