Re: 28-09-41 500Sq blenheim Z6163

Since that last posting I have managed to trace the families of the three crew (one in NZ, one in Canada and one in Norther Ireland)

I have also gathered 4 different images of the aircraft "beached" from helpful researchers, though some have ebay watermarks from where they were sold on ebay and I cannot use., the POW questionnaires and an MI( report from the pilot, presumably after the war.

All three men returned to their respective countries after the war started families and lived to good ages.

one question I have is the purpose of the mission ? The daughter of the Pilot says he said their mission was to attack St Nazaire (4 * 250lb bombs) . Would that have been a typical mission for a Coastal command Blenheim ? I wonder if anyone has the ORB that describes their mission ?

HI
I don't think this mission is in 500Sqn ORB, my guess is because it was from the detachment at harrowbeer, in which case it was the first aircraft lost from this airfield.

from my notes for 'harrowbeer in focus'

" On the 15th September, 500 Squadron equipped with Bristol Blenheim's arrived. They were to carry out risky intruder operations over airfields of enemy occupied France, and anti-shipping sorties near this coast, This they carried out successfully until they left on the 6th October"

I only ever found one photo of the detachment crews with a blenheim at harrowbeer.

cheers
Jerry

Hello, didn't read that on the topic, just hope you know the plane landed on a beach at Saint Efflam at Plestin les Grèves in the Cotes d'Armor department, north Brittany.
