Airbase Ljuban

Hi all.

Does anybody knows the exact location of Ljuban airbase ?
My assumption: 59.398638, 31.248606 (Google-Maps) ?

best wishes

Look at Lyuban (Любань) in the Leningrad Oblast.

Re: Airbase Ljuban

In 2014 Doug Stankey posted details of a website showing the locations of many Luftwaffe airfields in a variety of countries. See -

"Airfields of the Luftwaffe" on the Michael Holms website: www.ww2.dk

Unfortunately, airfields in Russia are not currently included. There are contact details on the website - perhaps he has information not yet posted which may be of use to you.

Good luck
Peter

Re: Airbase Ljuban

JoMe, considering the amount of fighting on the ground in the area of Lyuban it is probably an auxiliary airstrip. It was probably located near the railway depot. I didn't see an airfield on any of the current maps for present day.

JoMe,

You had it right in your first post. There is no airfield there currently but the outline is still there. See attachment:

Re: Airbase Ljuban

Oquaig, are you sure this is the location. I zoomed in on that location and all those lines appear to be drainage ditches which would indicate that is a swampy area that would make it unlikely for a landing strip.

Yes, those are drainage ditches and they seem to be growing hay (See hay stacks in red circles on higher resolution Yandex image, first attachment). Zoom out and you will see the outline of the 'airfield' which has the uncanny resemblance of a standard pre-war airfield with the dimensions 1100m by 1250m (see attachment 2) and compare with other airfields of the same dimensions (attachments 3,4,5). To me it is a very striking resemblance. One day a Luftwaffe aerial photo show up and settle the question once and for all.

Best wishes

Re: Airbase Ljuban

Hello again,

My friend AMVAS sent me this nice VVS operations map for October 1941 from the TsAMO. You will see on the top most red circle written in Russian "18.10.41 Bombarg." (where I believe LG 2 arrived on 25.9.41) and the red circle below "Kon.sent ag Istrel" (where I believe II.JG 52 arrived at on 2.9.41). I have attached the Soviet map and a google shot to compare. Enjoy this JoMe

best wishes to all
