Re: Luftwaffe Air Combat Slang
Holzauge ("wooden eye" ); the last airplane in a formation.
Ami; slang for American. Himmelfahrtskommando ("mission to heaven") ; suicide mission. Katschmarek; well known slang for a wingman, though I was told a few years ago it was originally a derogatory term for a particularly dim infantry recruit! Nachwuchs ("new growth"); late-war replacement aircrew. Alter Hase ("Old Hare"); experienced aircrew/pilot Blechkrawatte ("tin-necktie"); slang for the Knights Cross Halsschmerzen: a cynical slang-term (having "neck rash", "itching neck" or "sore throat") applied for glory-hunting pilots considered desperate for an awarding of the Knights Cross. Möbelwagen: ("furniture vans"); heavy bombers (usually US?) Donnerbalken ("thunder beam"); military latrine. Eiserne Kuh ("iron cow"); evaporated milk in a tin. Gulaschkanone ("goulash cannon"); mobile field kitchen |
