Hi Jerry
That is out of someone else's flickr account. Very interesting shot. I wonder how the pilot managed to land it with that kind of damage! Thanks Scott |

Re: Photo Eagle Squadron Spitfire MK Vb Mount Farm UK 1944
Hi
curiosity got the better of me...from various web sites. Lockheed F-5B-1-LO Lightning 67318 in midair collision with RAF Halifax, embedding one of the Halifax's fins in the Lightning's port wing and bending starboard wing back by 26 degrees. Starboard engine froze but pilot was able to get the plane on the ground. The Lightning is said to have arrived in the UK on 16th November 43 and was Salvaged on 22nd December 43. Photo shows the D Type unit embedded in side of the Lightning, said to be at Speke. cheers Jerry |

Re: Photo Eagle Squadron Spitfire MK Vb Mount Farm UK 1944
Hello,
I have been attempting to find details of the Halifax involved in this "collision" but so far without success. As noted the Lightning F-5 is said to have arrived in the UK about the 16th November 32 and salvaged on 22nd December 43. Record Card shows: 42-67318 received 9-22-43( 22nd Sept 43) at Dallas Mod. Centr by air. Newark NJ 10-20-43 (20th October 43). Departed USA 11-12-43 (12th November 43) Some say by sea but arrival in UK in my humble opinion is too swift so must have been flown over the pond. Received "SOXO" 11-16-43 (16th November 43). 8th AAF or 8 hours flying time.( not sure on this). then 11-30-43 (30th November 43) to 12-13-43 (13th December 43). lastly "SOXO" CON - AFMSCM F5B 8hrs 42 mins Flying time 6-9-44 (9th June 44) , 7-5-44 (5th July 44). The Halifax tail section "D Type" was relatively new at this time and one suggestion was that it may have been from a Halifax that was not yet given an RAF serial number as it was still under makers control . I am not sure of this though. Any thoughts or info on the Halifax is most welcome. Accident must have occured sometime between the 16th of November and the 13th December 43. From this I assume the accident took place on the 13th December 43. Alex |
