Italian roundels

Hi!

When were the red-white-green roundels discarded in favour of the fascist roundels on Italian aircraft?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Re: Italian roundels

Dear Chris,
the insigna was formally introduced on July 1936 even if there is photographic evidence that it was used before (oldest examples found by historian Roberto Gentilli were in February 1936).
Ciao

Re: Italian roundels

Dear Chris,
as an additional piece of information, that you may find interesting, the fascist roundels didn't replace the three coloured cockades because this national symbol, coming directly from the first world war, had already been discarded since the early twenties.
This, apparently, was not done not in connection with the advent of the fascism. The Italian planes in that period sported the three coloured fin tail as only national insigna and , on the upper wing, individual numbers or a flag called "guidone" whose colour identified the unit of the plane or simply nothing. A second national insigna in the form of a "fascio" inside an azure roundel, painted on both sided of the fuselage was introduced in March 1927.
Ciao
Ludovico
