Re: Brewster F2A Buffalo - top US pilots

No Navy claims while flying the Buffalo. I believe the last F2As were in VF-2 on the Lexington, and were exchanged for F4F-3s after Lex returned from the attempt to relieve Wake Island in December 1941.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: Brewster F2A Buffalo - top US pilots

Good morning,

this website
http://www.warbirdforum.com/midwayx.htm
which refers to Frank's and Barrett's books acknowledges the five F2A kills of Humberd, Kunz and White.
It indicates that McCarthy flew an F4F on 4Jun1942 and attributes a fully Mavis kills to Neefuss on 10Apr1942.
Frank, when ou talk to Barrett Tillman could you ask him what how many kills the US Americans scored in the F2A in total ?

I wish you a good start into the new week,

Michael

Re: Brewster F2A Buffalo - top US pilots

...Frank Olynyk will never join in again. That's depressing.

The 10 US Brewster F2A kills were definitely all scored by the land-based Marines. I found only 7 of them, so far (all VMF-221): William Humberd (2), Charles Kunz (2), Frances McCarthy (1), Philip White (1), James Neefus (0,5) and Robert Dickey (0,5). Who know the other 3 ?

Cheers,

Michael

Re: Brewster F2A Buffalo - top US pilots

Good afternoon focusfocus,

according to the "Victory Roll" James L. Neefus of VMF-221 shot down a Mavis von 10. March. The other pilots of the 4xBuffalo section were Francis McCarthy, Charles Somers and Robert Dickey. The other operational Buffalo squadron that is mentioned is VMF-211 but their kills are indicated as scored with the F4F and F4U in "US Marine Corps Fighter Squadrons of World War II".

Cheers,

Michael
