Re: soviet claims

Not sure if this book was published in English, but it is an amazingly detailed lexikon of Soviet fighter claims in WWII. I would say the 'Russian version' of Frank Olynyk's 'Stars & Bars' book on the American aces. See a sample page. Soviet aces in ABC order, all of their claims- by date, enemy type, location. Ranks, D.O.B., flown planes. If you need data on Soviet claims, get this book! Title: Aces of the Great Patriotic War. Cheers,

Gabor

It hardly needs to be. The only tough going for the non-Russian speakers would be in figuring out the locations. In a few weeks of Latin for Cyrillic substitution letter-by-letter, the reader would soon have all or most of them memorized and it would be smooth sailing thereafter.

Re: soviet claims

Another problem is the change of names of locations from the time of the war and now. The book is very good and the author who comes on here sometimes has a website that gives updates (at least he use too).

Yeah, I forgot that one. This is especially true for Ukraine and the former East Prussia. You can spend hours on just one place name trying to figure out its current spelling, past spelling and where it might be. For some place names, e.g., Ivanskoye, there are hundreds of them in Russia and it's impossible to determine with certainty which one it is.

Re: soviet claims

I noticed that HGabor's post had Mikhail Bykov's older book. The newer up to date book for 2008 has all the aces with 5 and more victories (Советские Асы Победы Сталинских Соколов 1941-1945). The hard part is also comparsions. Sergey Grigoroevich Glinkin 5 GIAP claimed two Bf 109 on the 6May43 but there is no losses in the ARR and III/JG3 for that day. He claims another on the 7May43 but again no loss in air combat for the III/JG3. For Stalingrad's air war should be a good comparsion for both sides with Nikita Ergov's up coming books on that air battle.
