More info Josef Kaiser of .9/JG 27

Greeting all - this is my first post ...

Below is a Facebook forum response to my inquiry into Uffz. Josef Kaiser. This is part of an update to an Apple iBook I wrote about my grandfather, Francis J. Morrissey, a co-pilot with the 722nd Squadron of the 450th BG. His crew was shot down by Kaiser's Bf 109 over Croatia on Morrissey's 27th mission on 30 May 1944.

My 600+ page book has great detail ... from his four phases at flying school, training at Alamogordo, flying from Herington, KS to Manduria, Italy, and flying missions on three different ships from 4 January to 30 May 1944.

His PW time was spent at Dulag Luft, Stalag Luft III and Stalag VIIa before making it home via Le Havre, France on the Liberty Ship Monticello on 3 June 1945. He later spent another 20+ years in the Air Force Reserve and Ohio Air National Guard at Clinton County AFB, before retiring in 1973.

Any additional info on Kaiser would be appreciated ...

Best,

Jeffrey

1) Kaiser was KIA 12.June 1944 in WNr.440305, which was marked as a machine from the Staff flight (black chevron 'Winkel' and horizontal bars 'Balken', like this: <-+-), not the 9./JG 27, and it is unlikely he was flying that machine on 30.May. 2) Here's a portside profile by Wrobel of Kaiser's 'boss' (Staffelkapitän), Peter Werfft. The green fuselage band indicated the JG 27. The white rudder indicated a Schwarm (4 machines), Staffel, or group commander -- a quick-recognition aid when reforming following an attack on the American bomber 'boxes.' The victory marks (Abschußbalken) were less-commonly applied by the 1944 period. The spinner decoration, ⅓ white, ⅔ black or RLM 70 black-green was applied at the factory, but the spiral-painted spinner was becoming more common. 3) What number Kaiser's machine may have been on 30.May is unlikely to be known unless someone has his logbook (Flugbuch). Pilot's may have an assigned-aircraft, but they fly the one(s) that is combat-ready, Thus even very-experienced pilots are sometimes seen flying many different aircraft within a brief period.

Jeffrey, as a new member your first five posts won't become visible until one of the moderators approves them (this is an anti-spam measure) so posting the same thing multiple times isn't necessary.
