4-engined German aircraft shot down?

Hi guys

I've just noticed the citation for the DFC awarded to Sqn Ldr Jeffrey McDougall for an operation over Amiens-Glisy airfield in November 1940, when he and his gunner (Sgt Gray) reported shooting down a four-engine aircraft.

Perhaps this is a well known incident, but I would appreciate further details, please. Was he flying a Blenheim? Which squadron? What was the actual date? What was the aircraft claimed?
PS: 110 Squadron Blenheim, 29 November 1940
Cheers
Brian

Re: 4-engined German aircraft shot down?

Hi Brian,

Tavender´s The Distinguished Flying Medal register has the following information.
Air gunner was Sgt Charles Henry Gray, 626019, 110 Sqn
It was the night 9/10th November at 03.00 hours
E/a was seen to hit the ground and explode. This was confirmed by another Blenhim crew.

Cheers,
Peter

Re: 4-engined German aircraft shot down?

By a process of elimination it was on the night of 9th/10th Nov 1940

S/L MacDougall P/O Skelton and Sgt Gray took off in L9305 at 02:00 hrs in the morning to bomb Amiens Glisy, which they did and returned at 09:20 hrs

No mention of e/a in the ORB

Regards

Martin

Re: 4-engined German aircraft shot down?

Hi Peter & Martin

Thanks guys

Martin - see following extract:

At 0300 hours Amiens-Glisy aerodrome was identified and found to be illuminated for night-flying. A large four-engined enemy aircraft was seen in the air and Squadron Leader McDougall decided to attack it before bombing the aerodrome. He rapidly overhauled the enemy and from close range Sergeant Gray opened fire. His first burst entered one of the port engines which immediately emitted smoke. He then fired two long bursts into the fuselage. The aircraft was seen to fall out of control and eventually it hit the ground and exploded. Squadron Leader McDougall then returned to Amiens-Glisy and bombed the aerodrome in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire.

PS: Further research would suggest this was in fact a Ju88 of III/KG1

Cheers
Brian
