Plt Off R Marcinkus 1 Sqn Crash Location 12 Feb 42

Some records say he came down in the sea but there are photos of his intact Hurricane in German hands which would indicate he force-landed on or near the coast in Belgium. Anyone got a firmer location?

Re: Plt Off R Marcinkus 1 Sqn Crash Location 12 Feb 42

The Dutch airwar website https://db.wingstovictory.nl/pdf/584-story.pdf has the coastal border area between the Dutch province of Zeeland and the Belgian province of West-Flanders. This roughly means in the Cadzand (NL) - Knokke (BE) area.

It says a German Vorpostenrotte shot the Hurricane down and the a/c crashlanded in above mentioned area. Marcinkus POW but executed after the Great Escape in 1944.

The Vorpostenrotte VP1302/1303 that claimed the Hurricane speaks of "Quadrat 8755 AN Mitte oben", which I gathered is the southern main channel towards the Scheldt estuary, called Wielingen. But perhaps a map wizard can help you out here.

Regards,
Leendert

Post #22 on this link seems to show the fuselage of the plane on a city street:

Not sure if there is enough background to identify a location. Same photo here:

Not exactly wizardy but you can find the Kriegmarine map squares here. An extract is attached with AN 87 shaded red.

I have no record of it landing in NL so Knokke seems to be a probability

Just bumping this-anyone got a source for the photo of it being taken away or even crash-landed (apart from John Foreman's book and what has been written already on this thread)
