Re: Me 110 from 7./NJG3 crash in Belgium

Morning Alain,

The other crewmember was Uffz. Karl Hungerland, also kia. But according to M.BALLS book 'Deutsche Nachtjagd - Personalverluste in Ausbildung und Einsatz' they crashed on the 23rd?
Both are buried at Fort-de-Malmaison in France. Hungerland (°31/1/20-Kassel) at bl.5,ro.22,gr.1010 & Neuhaus (°10/2/14-Herne) at bl.5,ro.22,gr.1009, also on the date of 23/7/1942. Hope this will help you. Best regards,

Dirk

Re: Me 110 from 7./NJG3 crash in Belgium

Thread resurrection time - just in the process of buying Walter Neuhaus's Flugbuch, which records 447 flights and 33 Feindflug.

I've only got limited information from the seller but he claimed Walter hit a balloon barrage over Cul de Court on the 23rd July (not 25th). He also mentioned he was a pre-war Lufthansa pilot, the aircraft registration is D5+IR apparently. I'll put some scans up when I get the Flugbuch in my hands.

Hi Siko,

I hope you get Neuhaus's Fb.

It appears it was not a barrage balloon but a balloon sent by UK in order to bother the Germans, carrying incendiaries, leaflets, etc.
At that moment, several balloons were quoted in Gendarmerie reports. It is said Neuhaus was tasked with shooting at those embarassing balloons. It seems he flew so low that he collided with some trees at Cul-des-Sarts, a forested area, close to Belgian-French border.

I would appreciate very much a copy of that page of the Fb, just for my personal interest/curiosity.

Best regards

Re: Me 110 from 7./NJG3 crash in Belgium

Hi Clin,

I have got Neuhaus's Flugbuch, but it sadly does not record any operational flying and only covers his training with NJG3. I assume he updated it once a month or something like that as unfortunately it ends a week or so before the accident.

I think this is fairly normal and another Flugbuch in my collection ends a month before his loss too. From my own time as an RAF pilot I always enjoyed filling in my logbook and did so after every flight, but was fairly unusual (!) and most of my colleagues only did so on a monthly basis, sitting with piles of authorisation sheets at the end of the month desperately trying to catch up!

The UK sent a balloon with incendiaries? Do you have more details?
