Pappy Gunn , the real story
Many have heard of Pappy Gunn for his development of the B - 25 in the Pacific War as a low level attack aircraft. This is just part of his story.
He and his family were in Manila when the Japanese began bombing prior to the invasion of the Phillipines. He hid Civilian Aircraft in a Cemetery which later became the " Bamboo Air Force " which he and others flew in the last days before the surrender at Corregidor. His wife and 4 children were interned in Manila for the duration of the War and is what drove him to wage a one man War. He let nothing get in the way in his desire to to defeat the Japanese . The words no and can't were not in his vocabulary. A good example is when he discovered 24 Dutch B-25s in Australia. He gathered enough Pilots to fly them , flew them in and Hijacked the B-25s. He discovered the bombsights had been removed and stored in a warehouse. When the Dutch Officer refused to turn them over , he stuck 2 45's in his face and told him to order his men to load them in his B - 25. He did so. The B -25s were later "transferred " to 5th AF. This book was written by his son, Nathaniel. The writing is a bit uneven and reproductions of pictures and documents could be better. But, if you want to read a great story about a true American Hero who gave his all and refused to lose - this is it! To order: www.authorhouse.com Gunn - search Cheers |
