He111 7./KG27 lost 19 August 1940
Hi guys
Although mentioned previously, it would seem that this aircraft, IG+MT, flown by Oblt Siegel, came down 300km north of San Sebastion, endeavouring to reach its airfield at Rennes. Although Chris Goss says it was not the aircraft attacked by 66 Squadron following an attack on RAF Honington, other sources state otherwise. Apologies for asking the same question, but would appreciate clarity. Cheers Brian |

Re: He111 7./KG27 lost 19 August 1940
Luftflotte 3 says target was Liverpool. History of KG 27 says Liverpool which would have been attacked overnight. Rennes to Liverpool to Honington to Rennes? Must have been totally lost & in any case times do not compute. No mention of Luftflotte 3 units attacking an airfield well into Luftflotte 2's AOR.At 1635 hrs on 19 Aug 40, Luftflotte 3 reported the missing crew from III./KG 27 had returned. Some records state Plt Off J A Studd was lost in this combat but according to the Cas File, he got involved with 19 Sqn's combat with a Bf 110 which looks to have been a Do 17. 66 Sqn's claim for a He 111 was a probable. Most confusing I'm afraid. You have my times of the Honington casualties

Where is San Sebastion? Cannot locate anything like that anywhere. If you mean San Sebastian, it makes even less sense, since that is in Spain. Cheers Stig |

Re: He111 7./KG27 lost 19 August 1940
Sorry Brian
I don't follow you. Are you saying you mean San Sebastian in Spain? If yes, 300km north means an appx place west of La Rochelle on the French west-coast. That in turn means the crew must have overflown the complete Bretagne (in daytime) and continued until their fuel ran out and not even once trying to reach land. Also using a reference point in Spain makes no sense. Chris says the rescued personal was back at 16.35H (or at least found by that time). Pure logic says they must have come down somewhere in the Channel, pretty close to land as well, since they were found that quick. Don't know from where you got this "300km north of San Sebastion", but it just don't feel right to me. Cheers Stig |

Re: He111 7./KG27 lost 19 August 1940
OK Robert
It still makes no sense to me. Why use a Spanish town and not a French one? Also, how come anyone could navigate so wrong? Cheers Stig |
