Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
The He 115 B2 was built with reinforced floats with steel ice runners under the floats letting it operate from compacted snow or ice.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
Back to my topic..I can't understand why he was presented a Honor Goblet after his death if he was not piloting the a plane. As far as I know, they were only presented to Luftwaffe Pilots only for bravery. Unless it was for services rendered as a polar explorer.

Awarded to Aircrew - http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/serv...blet/first.htm - in the case of Etienne probaly for his duties with the Weather Services and as an Artic Expert for setting up weather Stations.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
Very interesting goblet, and unusual to see one presented to a meteorologist. I'm still hoping my uncle's goblet will come out of the woodwork one day. Awarded to Hauptmann Dr. Albrecht Ochs in October, 1940.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
Tx Vince and I do hope u find ur uncles goblet. The Internet is such a vast source of information, I am sure if the goblet is out there it will show up someday. I have owned this Goblet for 25+ years and have never cleaned or polished it as many people do. I want to keep it in the exact condition that it was found.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
When the vet brought in the Honor Goblet for me to purchase, he also had a very unusual desk(I think) cigarette case..dimentions were about 3 inches high, 4 inches wide and 6-7 inches long. It was made in silver with a gold luftwaffe emblem. He said he picked both items up in the same destroyed house. I sold the cigarette case like a dummy. I never saw another one like it.

Re: Erich Etienne - Polar Explorer
[quote=welles_is;131051]I was wondering if someone can give me some more information on Erich Etienne. About 25-30 years ago, I purchased from a US vet a Honor Goblet that was presented to Mr. Etienne's family after his plane was shot down over Norway while returning from a polar exploration. The inscription in the Goblet reads: Wetterdienstassessor ERICH ETIENNE AM 18 10 42.
