Rick as far as I can tell a VerbindungsKommando ( Connection Command) was a responsible for maintaining liasion between units . Search under 'Verbindungskommando Luftwaffe ' and there is Asisbiz section giving its WW2 breakdown plus posts of its current use in German armed forces .

Re: Information concerning loss of Uffz. Georg Kapfhammer - killed in transport flight - 01.01.43
Hello Rick,
since autumn 1941 gliders were increasingly used for supply flights in support of cut-off German troops on the Eastern front. In spring 1942 the Oberkommando der Luftwaffe (Luftwaffe High Command) set up headquarters for four Verbindungskommandos (S) [S = Segelflug] or Liaison Detachments (Glider). These were supposed to enable control of transport glider operations. The Verb.Kdo (S) V was attached to the Luftwaffenkommando (LwKdo) Ost at Orscha. The other units: Verb.Kdo (S) 1 attached to Luftflotte 1 Riga Verb.Kdo (S) 2 attached to LwKdo Südost Belgrad Verb.Kdo (S) 4 attached to Luftflotte 4 Saporoshje Sources: Wolfgang Dierich “Die Verbände der Luftwaffe“ Luftwaffe im Focus Edition No 28 pages 27-32. Yes, because a Heimatflug is a non-operational flight.
