Re: Shot Down P47 27 FBG
Based on the D on the tail, it *could* be P-47D-25RE 42-26438 red D, shot down by flak on 2/11/1945 at 1630, 1 m N of Taglio di Po, Italy. Pilot 1st Lt Glen H Spencer POW. MACR 12122. This is the only 27th FBG P-47 coded D in my database of losses. Which of course does not mean that it is the one in the picture.
Enjoy! Frank.

Re: Shot Down P47 27 FBG
Thanks Frank! I will anote it as such, with a question mark. I had tentatively assigned it to the 523rd FS. Per Camouflage and Markings:P-47 USAAF, ETO & MTO, the 523rd had a medium blue horizontal tail stripe, a blue A/C letter on the vertical fin and alternate cowl stripes in blue

Re: Shot Down P47 27 FBG
Actually, I may have to cast a doubt on the ID. On the photograph, the D looks more like being in blue, rather than red.
There were the Squadron IDs for the 27th FBG taken from the above Ducimus publication. 522nd FS-Red horizontal tail stripe, red A/C letter painted on fuselage forward of national insignia, and often alternate engine cowling shutter in red 523rd FS - Medium blue horizontal tail stripe, blue A/C letter painted on the vertical fin, and alternate cowl stripes in blue 524th FS - Yellow tail stripe and alternate cowling stripes in yellow. The A/C letter on the fin was in black. This aircraft has what appears to be a medium blue letter "D" on the tail, thus making this a 523rd FS machine. |

Re: Shot Down P47 27 FBG
According to a German document (casualty No. ME 2116) and an entry in the MACR list for September 1944 the crash place was near Carspach, 18 km southwest Mulhouse.
