Me 262 Interception- Jan 11,1945-1 P-47 Shot down

On January 10,1945, Lt. Robert W. Nunnally, O-824550, 324th FG, 314th FS was shot down by a Me-262 over Germany, near Karlsruhe.

Here is an excerpt from the eyewitness report (MACR 11123). Fellow pilot, Lt. James Spencer, reported :

"In looking back , I observed what appeared to be a twin engine elliptical wing plane directly on the tail of #2 aircraft (Lt. Nunnally) I called a right break and observed a small explosion from Yellow #2,followed by a larger explosion. He began spinning down and I did not see him again."

Any idea as to the Me 262 unit?

I checked in the book "JG 7" by Manfred Boehme but did't find it. It is probably listed in the 4 Volume set of "Me 262" by J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek.

The Me 262 did not have elliptical wings. Your quotation doesn't even claim the attacking aircraft was an Me 262.

Now what types of twin engine airplanes were attacking P-47s in January 1945?
Somehow, I don't see Me-110s,Ju-88s or ME410 attacking P-47s with any kind of
regularity, though I suppose it could happen.

And while the Me262 does not have elliptical wings "per se", it does have sweptback wings which could appear as elliptical in the second or two the witness was observing it.

According to Foreman & Harvey, no claim for a 262 on this date

I'm thinking III/Erg JG-2 since this was in their area of operations. The 324th served at this time with the 1st Tactical AF.

By making a claim for facts not in evidence, you risk propagating false information. Use conjecture, but don't state something as fact when you don't know that it is.

Re: Me 262 Interception- Jan 11,1945-1 P-47 Shot down

Hi guys,

Note the date as in the e mail as distinct from the title is 10 January 1945. The claim was made by Leutnent Wilhelm Batel of 1./KG 51.

Regards

Russell
