Re: JG54 Heinrich Wefers MIA date?

Hi John

Wefers was born on 14th April 1919. Had fifty-one confirmed claims over Russian aircraft between 28th June 1941 and 20th March 1943 with 4./JG 54. Then 4./JG 54 temporarily swapped with a Staffel from JG 26 thus ending up in the West. On 18th May 1943 he tried to out-dive an American P-47....either he had misidentified the type, or it was just inexperience, but you donot try to out-dive a P-47. Anyway the 4th Fighter Group aircraft shot down Wefers in his Bf109 over Ghisteller, Belgium, and he baled-out from an altitude of 30 metres(too low to deploy his parachute), and he fell to his death!

Kind Regards

Johannes
