109G with Main Wheel Covers?

Hi;
picked up this link on a Facebook page dedicated to the 109:

http://archiv-akh.de/filme?utf-8=%E2%9C%93&q=109#1

at 10:31:48 there is film of a 109G (G-6?) with main wheel covers. This is not a prototype, definitely an operational machine, but that just seemed very curious to me. In the past, I've only seen reference to main wheel covers in association with the K-series. Anybody have an idea what this is all about?

Re: 109G with Main Wheel Covers?

HI Paul...

The covers were designed in 1942...

Due to production delays and materials...it never became standard until the Me109K.

There are a few photos of the G machines that have these covers...but usually they were under special circumstances...high ranking officer, etc.

Look carefull Paul and you will see that the 'covers' are in fact the flaps...see up to 56:18 and the optical illusion is apparent.

Looks like its the Hermann Graf edition of "Pimp my ride". The covers are definietely rare on the 109G, though as Harrison said they were actually intended for the G from the start, hence why the change of squarish wheel wells on the Gustav (F had rounded ones).

Mike

Do you have a close-up photograph of one of the covers in your inventory? If so, would it be possible to post?

Thanks,

D.B.

Re: 109G with Main Wheel Covers?

mmmmmmmmmm...

I only have photos of a relic one that I used to own...but it was the late war wood type....so it broke into many pieces.

I'll see if I still have some stock pics...

I do not have the aluminum one, though.
