Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Clint
What about M.7056? When checking WDF 86 the photo is there on page 9 Also according to Gregory Alegi, both M.4874 and M.7056 are model M.5 Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
I don't have the WDF. You are correct of course about M7056 being an M.5. I posted too quickly I think. I just wanted a second opinion on that one, because as I know you're aware fronm an earlier post the WDF serials are a bit questionable. Given that the macine shown is M.7056, I tend to agree the last digit is 6 that would make it the first of that batch of M.5s. I have a bit more of a problem with M.4874. At the moment I'm transcribing serials and units from Gentilli and Varriale I Reparti and I'll have to go back and check since I've only just reached the naval units, but I thought the m.48** batch were L.3. In fact I've just checked on M.4876 which is the closest I've recorded yet and its an L.3. I have been finding, despite odd typos I Reparti more reliable on serials than the Alfgi WDFs.Alegi having recorded 7056 as a Pomilio PE serial. Though in his defence he does admit in the WDF on the SAML's that the serials he gives are a bit speculative. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hi Clint
Well, you are correct about there being too many double serials in our Italian lists I am slowly progressing through the WDF volumes (I think I have all with direct connection to Italy) but I don't have all of them, so some French and English types may slip by. I will send it over to you when "finished".... With regard to the M.5 Alegi actually calls the batch M.4866 - 4875 type MA. Photos shown: Ma.4868, M.4869, M.4870 and Ma.4873. Seems it was a sort of interim type. The M.5 was a single-seater (and thus smaller) while the L.3 (M.3) was a side-by-side two-seater, but since they are basically in scale it is dificult to see unless you have two persons in the cockpit... As far as I know he has made extensive research into flying boats so I am pretty certain he is correct this time. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
I will tentatively type in MA for the range of serials M.4866 to M.4875 you mention on my excel doc. Thanks. I take it that the photos of the MA machines look different from either the L.3 or M.5? As mentioned I'm finding it far more productive using I Reparti as a base for Italian serials rather than the WDFs. On the specific area we're discussing WDF 117 has a batch of Pomilio PE running from 6840 to 7097. As can be seen this is very wrong if the Macchi M.5 shown in the link is M.7052 and I have other M.5 between serial 7052 and 7097. There are also examples of where one WDF contradicts another by the same author. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
I know Clint
As I said, when I am "finished", you will be the first to get it. Perhaps you then have other things you can fill in. Cheers Stig |
