Dornier 17Z losses Maubeuge 16.5.40
Evening, im seeking details of 2x Dornier 17Z bombers shot down in, and around the area of Maubeuge on 16.5.40. from II/KG76.
From the scant information i have, its believed they were downed by French Morane MS-406 fighters. If anybody can help id be really grateful. Rgs, Steve. |

Re: Dornier 17Z losses Maubeuge 16.5.40
Steve,
I am not aware of any losses to II./KG76 in the circumstances you describe. To the best of my knowledge KG76 only had the following casualties on May 16, 1940: 3./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged in attacks by No. 607 Squadron Hurricanes south of Vervins 3.15 p.m. Uffz H. Nöller killed. Aircraft repairable. II./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Damaged in forced-landing at Dortmund due to fuel shortage. No crew casualties. Aircraft damaged but repairable. 7./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by groundfire and possibly attacks by Moranes of GC III/2 during low-level attack on motorised columns near Maubeuge 12.30 p.m. Obergefr K. Kübler badly wounded, admitted to hospital at Bonn-Hangelar. Aircraft repairable. 7./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by groundfire and possibly attacks by Moranes of GC III/2 during low-level attack on motorised columns south of Charleroi 12.30 p.m. Oberfw H. von Dahlen killed. Aircraft repairable. 9./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by groundfire and possibly attacked by Moranes of GC III/2 during low-level attack on motorised columns near Avesnes 12.30 p.m. Uffz H. Müller badly wounded, admitted to hospital at Bonn-Hangelar.Aircraft repairable. 9./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Badly damaged by groundfire during low-level attack on motorised columns near Avesnes. Re: Dornier 17Z losses Maubeuge 16.5.40
Peter, many thanks for the additional losses for 16.5.40, this is very useful.
The losses i asked about came from Bingham's " Blitzed " publication , of which is now fairly dated, and often said to be less accurate! so to speak. Best regards, Steve. |
