Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Hi guys

Can anyone advise me which Luftwaffe units were based on Crete in July 1943? Were these reinforced during the year? Were there any Italian units during the same period of time?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Thanks Byron

Any idea of the types of aircraft (five) destroyed on the night of 4/5 July 1943 on Kastelli airfield (Crete) by British commandos?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Hi Brian,

I have somewhere the whole story, i must searche. For now this :

Am 13.06.42 ein französisches Kommando vernichtete in Iraklion 16 Ju 88 A5 der I. Gruppe / L.G. 1.
Der Sabotagetrupp bestand aus Kdt. Georges Bergê, dem Caporal-Chef Jacques Mouhot, dem Caporal Pierre Lêostic, dem Parachutisten Jaell Sibard, sowie dem englischen Captain Earl George Jellicoe und dem griechischen Ltn. Constantin Petrakis.
Werk-Nr.: 7, 5578, 5556, 8, 5572, 213, 25 u.a., Ju 88 D, aus 2./F 124: 430054, 430093

cheers

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Thanks Byron

I'm interested in the 4/5 July 1943 raid, not 1942!

Cheers

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Byron

I am a bit puzzled you mention 2.(F)/124 with regard to the sabotage, since previously you have listed 2.(F)/123 as connected to the Island.
All info I have is that 2.(F)/124 no longer existed at this time. However 2.(F)/123 was based in Crete when the sabotage took place. Fingertrouble?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

i ment 2./123, the W.Nrs. 430054 and 430093 belonged to 2./123,
mea culpa

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Hi Brian,

I think i found something interesting for you, that is a document of "Geheime Feldpolizei 611" speaking about the raid of 05.07.1943.

The destroied plain was a "zweisitzer Klemm Maschine Muster 35"

regards

Re: Crete 1943 - Luftwaffe units

Many thanks, Byron

Unfortunately, my German isn't very good, nor my eyesight!! Hopefully, someone may be able to pick out any relevant indicators as to which aircraft were destroyed/damaged apart from the single Klemm 35? I notice reference to Ju87s - were any attacked?

Cheers
Brian
