Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
Hello Folks,
About to start a model of Ju88A-14 3E+HM, of 4/KG6 which was involved on a raid over Edinburgh on the evening of 24/3/1943 and was wondering if anybody out there might be able to help re a couple of questions regards markings colours. I have it on fairly good authority, that the letter H on the codes, was Black with a thin outline. Could anybody out there confirm this for me. The Second question regards the tips of the spinners. Some reports say that the front of the spinner was painted White, whilst others say that the aircraft may have carried 2 thin White bands. A wee bit of help would be much appreciated here. Thanks in advance. Kenny Walker. |

Re: Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
Welcome, Mr. Walker,
Ju 88A-14 WNr.144537 of the 4./KG 6, coded 3E+HM Pilot Oblt. Fritz Förster was KIA 24./25.March 1943 together with his crew (Beobachter Ogefr. Heinz Kristall, Bordfunker Uffz. Horst Blum & Bordschütz Gefr. Willi Euler) due to flying into a hillside; Hare Hill, 10km s. of Edinburgh. I do not have a photograph of this one, but photos of other 4./KG 6 machines show the individual Kennung as you describe, black with white trim. Also often seen are the ‘last two’ (in your case, “HM”) in small white characters on the fin (beneath, and slightly aft of the vertical centerline of the Hakenkreuz). The spinners likely had two narrow bands, which was common in the II/KG 6, but examples in 6. Staffel are in two differing colors, yellow for the Staffel (aft), and perhaps red, for the II Gruppe. A Ju 188E shows white aft, and the darker tone forward -- perhaps this one was from 4./KG 6? That said, twin-engined aircraft can show mis-matched spinners. Good luck in your build, GRM |

Re: Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I take it then that it is unlikely that the aircraft had 2 thin White bands round its spinners? There is no mention of any colours on The Crash Report when I thought there might be. We just had in August, 4 generations of the pilot come to Edinburgh to visit The Memorial on Hare Hill. hence my wanting to build this aircraft. |

Re: Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
Would there not be a difference between 2 and 4 regards the colour round the spinners?

Re: Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
The photo is taken in June 1943 and is of a 6./KG 6 A-14. It is heavily camouflaged for night operations and the fuselage code cannot be seen. The spinner has a single thin band in the Staffel colour

Re: Ju88A-14, 3E+HM.
The book "Luftwaffe Crash Archive vol 10" has nothing about the color of this aircfatt but said the following about Ju 88A-14 144353 3E+BH of 1./KG 6 that also crashed into a hill that same night:
"Camouflage: the lower surfaces of the wings were lamp blacked over pale blue but the underside of the fuselage had not been blacked out. Spinners dark green, with two white rings." Definitely a bad night for Luftwaffe that lost 5 Ju 88 of KG 6 and 3 Do 217 of KG 2, a hard price for the small bomber force available in the West at the time. Especially as the raid seems to have been a total failure. There is no mention of it in the monthy British report for March 1943 listed in the book "The Blitz then and now", and the CWGC list of Civilian War Dead for Edinburgh city show no name for this night. Indeed there are 87 civilian war dead listed by CWGC for 24 and 25 March 1943: _ 49 at Ashford (47 on 24th, two DOW on 25th) _ 1 at Eastbourne (DOW from wounds suffered in January 1943) _ 37 in India, in Chittagong area. The book "air war for Burma" says that Dohazari airfield was hit that day by Japanese aircraft, with "four personnel killed". All 37 dead except one are men, so I suspect them to have been part of a civilian work force used on or around the airfields around Chittagong (among the listed death places are Dohazari, and Chagachar Aerodrome). But still nobody in Scotland except the German airmen. |
