P-51D Radiator Question

When flying combat am I correct in assuming the radiator door on a P-51D would be open to cool down the hot engine? I have noticed that many people depict them closed in this scenario.

Strafing a train is the scenario I'm interested in....I think it would be open? Any ideas?
