133 Eagle Squadron.

Can anyone tell me when AFLt HAS Johnston joined 133? Initially I thought it was in August 1941 (when the squadron was formed) however there appears to have been a long period of training after this and Johnston was still only a PO in August 1941, albeit with one (probably two) kills to his credit.

From the Air Force lists it is clear he was made a Flying Officer in November 1941 and therefore I am of the opinion that he was probably made an Acting Flight Lieutenant around the same time. His promotion to Flight Lieutenant followed a year later in November 1942.

regards

Keith

Re: 133 Eagle Squadron.

Keith,

According to Phil Listemann's monograph on 133 Sqn., Johnston (misspelled "Johnstone") was A Flight commander from 27.08.41 to 07.03.42.

Regards,
Tom

Re: 133 Eagle Squadron.

Thanks Tom,

Blimey that was a quick promotion. Johnston only joined 257 Squadron in January, but he must have shown a lot of promise.

best regards

Keith

Re: 133 Eagle Squadron.

Just read a memoir containing Johnstons letters as a District Officer. According to his biographer he joined 133 Squadron in September 1941 but I believe that she is basing that on a letter written in September so the 27 August date seems spot on - and my supposition way off!

Keith
