Fw 58 Weihe DC+EX of 6./JG 5 photo in a book

Hello!

I was recently paging one Finnish local history book in a bookshop. The book is titled "Staden och hakkorset" (yes, Swedish) by Patrik Sundqvist and tells wartime German/Germany related stories from Jakobstad (in Finnish: Pietarsaari) town.

The book also contains one short chapter of a fatal Ju 52 accident. But the real item for me was one photo of whole another plane and incident. This photo shows a Fw 58 on belly on a field being dismantled. Stammkennzeihen is very likely DC+EX (EX is cleary seen). On nose can be seen the 6./JG 5 emblem, shamrock on diamond-shaped shield.

With the quick look on the book I did not notice any additional info about of the photo. I couldn't find anything about the accident/incident in Hannu Valtonen's books or in Mombeeks JG 5 opus either.

If I had to guess the period of time is 1942 or so, but can be also any date till mid-September 1944. There looks not to be snow on ground, though. The emergency landing took place at Jakobstad (Pietarsaari) area. Location was given in the photo caption, but I already managed to forget it.

Does anyone of the forum members have additional info about this plane (WNr and so on) and incident? Casualties?

Thanking in advance,
Kari

BTW Photo source given was "Privat foto".

Hi, Kari

I would guess that a distinct possibility is the FW 58 of Flugbereitschaft/Kommandierende General der Deutsche Luftwaffe in Finnland.

See loss record:

http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=110116

Location is given as Eismeerstrasse km 184, which I believe must be close to the kilometer marker 184 on this faily long road. Would that fit your location?

Regards,
Andreas B

It belonged to St./II/JG 5 in 1943 according to a FB from the unit.

Sadly the list in Lw-Verband does contain several errors, this beeing one of them.

Hello Andreas!

Yes I noticed the loss in Valtonen's book Pohjoinen ilmasota. But Jakobstad/Pietarsaari is a little coastal (east coast of gulf of Bothnia) town a bit North from Vaasa (Vasa in Swedish). Germans surely had their own ideas which was Central Finland etc. but I have hard time accepting Jakobstad being at Eismeerstrasse. So, I am sceptical about it.

Haven't been working with the air observation logs for ages and in my very incomplete notes there is no signs for DC+EX. Fw 58 was not in my focus of interests then.

Cheers,
Kari

PS I am looking forward of seeing your new book. I hope the local aviation bookshop will have it soon.

Hi, Kari

I agree that this is an unlikely match then, regarding the location information. Is it possible for you to post a scan?

Will look for more matches, problem often being that these aircraft were reported by higher headquarters and other non-frontline units.

Andreas B

Hei!

Well, the book is still in the bookshop! I took a glance of the book again during today's lunchbreak. The location in the caption is "Socklot" and also the time "hösten 1943" or Autumn 1943 is given.

If and when the book arrives in local libraries then I can loan the book and scan the photo. The book is somewhat expensive to buy only for one small photo.

All the best,
Kari
